022 VIRGIN AUSTRALIA DECEMBER 2017

Virgin Australia News

Virgin Australia is playing a leading role in the use and
production of sustainable aviation fuels in Australia, recently
announcing the trial of sustainable aviation fuel through
Brisbane Airport’s fuel supply system.
The initiative will see the renewable fuel and chemical
producer, Gevo Inc, supply biojet fuel for flights out of Brisbane,
including Virgin Australia departures, over a two-year period.
Biojet produces lower carbon emissions than traditional jet
fuel and can be derived from sustainable sources, including
sugarcane bagasse, molasses, wood waste and agave.
It’s the first time in Australia that biojet will be supplied
through an airport’s regular fuel supply system and the first
time that biojet produced using the alcohol-to-jet process will
be supplied to an airport’s regular fuel supply system.
Virgin Australia’s chief executive oicer John Borghetti
says, “This initiative builds on Virgin Australia’s commitment
to be a leader in the commercialisation of the sustainable
aviation fuel industry in Australia.”

What do you love about your job?
The fact that I’d still happily do what I do,
even if it wasn’t my job. I’ve got jazz
playing on my Devialet Phantom, I’m
working on marketing ideas, reviewing a
contract, and operating live-chat on our
websites. It might not sound normal but
there’s nowhere I’d rather be. Where
was the last place you flew for
business? We have an operation in New
Zealand, so I headed over to Auckland
to catch up with our team. Every month
I’m visiting key cities to work on growth
ideas with our hi-fi retailers. How do you
pass the time when you’re in the air?
I usually get through emails, look at sales
reports and read the Harvard Business
Review. On longer flights, some quiet
reflection is in order. Some of the best
business ideas come when you don’t
have external distractions. What’s your
all-time favourite holiday destination?
Japan. It’s the only place you can go
in the developed world where the
experiences are totally diferent to
the West. What do you never travel
without? Definitely my OPPO PM-3
headphones. They’re super comfortable
and the audio quality is delightful.
What’s your top travel tip? The Gmail
Ofline Chrome extension — it lets me
read, archive and send emails, no matter
what my internet situation. My record so
far is 110 emails sent on one flight.
Where are you heading next? In a
couple of weeks, I’ll go to Hong Kong
with a few of our key retailers for
a Devialet conference.

Domestically, Virgin Australia will
