BOLD, BREEZY PRINTS

Well... those shoulders won’t actually
be so ‘cold’ as it’s a look that is perfect
for warmer weather, with beautifully
bare shoulders being one of the classic
signals of Spring and Summer fashion.
What’s more, it’s a universally flattering
look, as shoulders are usually the easiest
part of the body to show off, no matter
what your age or shape, so it’s a trend
that has returned from last Spring ...
but this year, there are lots of different
ways to bare them, from the simple
white shirt updated with cut-outs, to the
printed and ruffled style with shoulder
straps by Vogue Patterns on the facing
page, (The pattern also includes options
with or without the ruffle and with
gathered or flaring sleeves. Any version
would be the perfect thing to throw over
jeans!) You’ll see lots of other delicious
ways to bare your shoulders with tops
and dress in upcoming issues.
Bright, breezy prints are also nothing
new when it comes to Spring fashion.
They are always as much a part of the
season as blooming flowers... and
those classic floral prints that usually
bloom all over clothes right about now
aren’t the only way to work a print. In
fact, what’s more modern is to go for
something bolder and more graphic. It
gives your garment a more sophisticated
(and agelessly stylish!) edge in a way
that fussy florals can’t. And it’s even
better if that print is coloured in
unexpected, offbeat shades and takes
on surprising forms that move beyond
predictable dresses. The knockout
jumpsuit on this page is a perfect
example. It’s a great spring update on
the item; - softly sashed at the waist,
with wider, softer pant legs and in easier
‘flowy’ fabrics such as jersey or challis. In
such a graphic print that’s shaded in hues
not traditionally associated with Spring,
such as teal, purple, sand and grey, it is
much fresher and more sophisticated
than the usual printed maxi dress ... and
can go many more places! (This pattern
also has a sleeveless option, and would
look just as great in plain brights or
neutrals if you’re shy about wearing so
much print.)
