Australian Stitches — September 2017

N

ot only are these open-front
banded jackets agelessly
versatile, they can be easily
dressed up and down, especially
if you sew them in an interesting
texture or fabric. Fashion is
defi nitely on a quilt trip at the
moment, and not just for hardy
weekend wear that only comes out
in the colder months, as quilting
adds a fresh and unexpected edge
to light cotton or chambray fabrics,
as we see in the nifty McCall’s
jacket on these two pages. It’s a
terrifi c look that not only easily
plays with jeans or khakis for the
weekend, but it can also go to
town when dressed up over a soft,
pretty dress that’s sharpened up
with this season’s favourite bold,
graphic print. Don’t be afraid to
mix so much texture and print, as
those contrasting mixes such as
quilted chambray (traditionally only
for casual garments) with softer,
fl owing fabrics in a feminine dress
are what give fashion its playful,
sophisticated edge now ... plus,
it’s such a fun, creative way to
experiment with your wardrobe!
Keeping to just a few co-ordinating
colours will make it easy.
