A DIFFERENT STRIPE
One fashion ‘signal’ of Spring that always looks
great, year after year; - The clean, crisp, classic
appeal of stripes. By now, you probably would
have one - or several! - striped Breton tops
in your wardrobe, but stripes bring a more
imaginative line to your clothes this season.
They now come in different widths and go in
different directions, and usually on the same
garment! This kind of innovative stripe play
looks best on dresses, which are hands-down,
the best striped item to own this season, (and
we show several more great striped dresses
elsewhere in this issue,) because of the figure-
flattering potential of those multidirectional
stripes. The style by Vogue Patterns at left is
a terrific example of what we’re talking about:-
The ‘cold shoulder’ cut-outs, the flounced cape-
like sleeves, the graduated stripes and the way
they’re spaced down the dress, and of course,
the vertical panel of stripes running down the
front all make wearing horizontal stripes a snap!Sheer fabrics are still a big warm-weather
trend, (see our Australian Fashion Week resort
runway report elsewhere in this issue,) but there
are more wearable ways to let some light in.
Broderie anglais, lace, eyelet, and other open-
weave fabrics featuring subtle cut-outs not
only make light of traditionally hard-to-wear
shapes such as those wide-leg culottes on
the facing page, (they would look really heavy
and droopy in a solid fabric,) but they are also
definitely more intriguing - not to mention more
flattering - than ‘letting it all hang out’. As well
as lightening things up, they add stylish interest
to the simplest of shapes, such as in the pretty
bell-sleeved sundress that’s also on the facing
page ... but most of all, these sorts of airy
fabrics are definitely one of the prettiest and
most feminine signals of Spring, one that will
