Love Sewing — Issue 45 2017

(Nora) #1
 Embroider the heart design
using backstitch, working
French knots in the centre of
the hearts and for birds’ eyes,
and a single cross stitch in
the oval beneath the centre
top heart. Sew a long running
stitch border 6mm in from the
edge of the linen square.
 Check your cushion top
measures 32cm square and
trim if necessary. Take the
rickrack and, starting halfway
down one side of the right
side of the cushion top, pin on
the braid all the way around,
aligning the edge of the
rickrack with the raw edge of
the fabric and gently curving
the braid around the corners.

 Baste the
rickrack
in place
6mm from
the edge,
sewing down
the middle of
the braid, so that
when the cushion
is turned right side out,
only little half moons
will show.
 To make the envelope
back, take the remaining
two red dot fabric rectangles
and turn under 6mm along
one long edge of each,
turn under again and
stitch the hem in place.
Overlap the hemmed edges

(RS facing up),
so that the
two rectangles
measure 32cm
square and pin
in place.
 Pin the
envelope back
to the cushion front,
right sides together, and sew
around the outside edge,
sewing on the same line as the
rickrack. Snip the corners and
trim the seams.
 Zigzag-stitch over the
seams to prevent fraying and
turn the cushion cover right
way out. Place the cushion
insert inside and take a seat,
you’re fi nished!

Top tip

Fold back the ends of your
rickrack so the raw edges
are trapped in the seam
allowance to
prevent fraying
