the early 1980s. There is a healthy spirit of co-operation between producers that didn’t
exist in the 1990s, helped – I think – by the proliferation of Douro wines and the need
to promote and publicise them. Port and the Douro are facing some grave structural
problems that are in urgent need of attention. Concluding with a postscript that is the
most negative of those in the three editions of this book, I am still certain that the Douro
will continue to be one of the world’s most captivating wine regions and that Port will
remain among the greatest of wines.
