Created in 1932, the Casa do Douro has lost much of its statutory power since it purchased
a 40 per cent share of the Real Companhia Velha in 1990. It operates today as a federation
purporting to represent the interests of growers and co-operatives in the demarcated Douro
region. The Casa do Douro’s principal role is to maintain a complete register (cadastro) of
every farmer and all vineyards within the demarcated region. All growers are obliged by law
to register with the Casa do Douro.
