The Port Wine Brotherhood was established to diffuse, promote and consolidate the prestige
of Port worldwide. One of its activities is the organisation of the annual boat race between
barcos rabelos that takes place each year on 24 June to commemorate Oporto’s patron saint,
São João. The author of this book is a Cavaleiro (‘knight’) of the Confraria do Vinho do
Porto.

growers. The union of co-operatives was formed to co-ordinate and promote the activities
