moments from page 36;

Diana’s style squad

evolution, from page 72.

D

o you remember where you
were when the unfathomable
news of Diana’s death first
filtered through? For me, it
wasn’t just a memory; I literal-
ly flew into the eye of the
storm. In the wee hours of
August 31, 1997, I arrived in
Paris to spend a few days with
my sister before heading south
for a photojournalism festival
as marie claire’s then-features director. During the cab ride
in, I recall hearing sirens ricocheting across the city and
wondered what drama was unfolding. Oblivious, I dropped
my bag at the hotel and headed to the local marché to meet my
sister for an obligatory croissant. It was high summer and,
despite the early hour, a large group had gathered outside
a newsagency, papers in hand, voraciously reading the sad
news on the front page. Diana had been killed in a horrific
accident a few streets from where we were standing. Stunned
with disbelief, we decided to see it for ourselves and rushed to
the Pont de l’Alma. The bridge above the now-famous tunnel
was already filling with TV crews, journalists, tourists and
locals, many laying large wreaths on the sidewalk. Despite the
surge, it was eerily quiet. People were shocked into silence.
Two decades after that world-shattering day, Diana
continues to command headlines. But it’s not just her extraor-
dinary life and tragic death that’s kept the world intrigued; her
transformation from “shy Di” to style icon is now legendary. To
mark the anniversary of her death, we interviewed three key
players in her evolution to confident, glamorous princess.
What surprised me most was the fact Diana initially had no
interest in fashion but soon recognised its power and used this
to craft her identity. Turn to page 72 for their recollections.
Still on the topic of transformative style, the September
edition marks our annual fashion special showcasing the
coolest spring collections. Whether you’re a minimalist or
maximalist, you’ll love the simple silhouettes in “Desert Rose”
(page 118) and the punchy patterns in “Up!” (page 98). Anyone
on a budget (aren’t we all?) should flick to the Shopping section
on page 131 for our selection of the hottest high-street finds,
and then page 110 for the eight key pieces under $ 300 every
wardrobe needs. T o cap off this
month’s style extravaganza, we
pay tribute to design house Dior
for 70 years of unforgettable,
fantastical fashion (page 36).
J’adore!
