Wearing burqas and veils is prohibited in some areas of France, Belgium, Austria and the Netherlands.

According to a poll taken late last
year, almost half of all Australians
support a prohibition on Muslim
immigration. Mosques around
the country have been targeted by
vandals, and there are calls to ban
the burqa in public places.
In this climate of fear, Australian
photographer Fabian Muir began
shooting his Urban Burqa series,
which depicts a woman wearing
a blue Afghan burqa in everyday
environments such as the milk aisle
of the supermarket, a skate park
and a McDonald’s drive-through.
“It’s quite a toxic atmosphere
at the current time, so taking the
burqa into urban environments
was a way of conveying the challenges
facing these people,” explains Muir.
“Despite everything, I remain
optimistic – and Urban Burqa
is a small part of that response.”
