Exactly 15 years ago Wes Anderson’s The
Royal Tenenbaums hit screens. I fell for
the film instantly—and the twee, vintage
aesthetic that Anderson and costume
designer Karen Patch created down to the
last detail. But who would have guessed
that one film would inspire major fashion
trends for a decade-plus. On recent run-
ways there have been Lacoste’s tracksuits
and Gucci’s Margot-like coats and berets.
The look is proper but hardly puritanical,
and fashion is better for it. Happy birth-
day, TRT! —Noah Silverstein, associate

We’ve all seen those totes made from
recycled materials, but shoes you’d actu-
ally want to wear? I was a skeptic—until I
saw Rothy’s debut collection of chic f lats.
They’re constructed from soft fibers of
recycled plastic using a 3-D knitting pro-
cess. Comfy and slim, they look seriously
cute with cropped denim pants. Another
reason to love: You can throw them in
the wash. Done. —Elissa Velluto, senior
