BIG PICTURE
From as early as the 1960s, astronauts have been photographing the planet. This image of Melbourne was shot from the International Space Station
in March 2012, 400km above Earth, by European Space Agency astronaut André Kuipers. The Dutchman was a crew member on the long-duration
PromISSe mission. The image now forms part of the ‘Loss of Night’ project, which uses astronauts’ images to study the impacts of light pollution.
