This project is being published over three issues of
Homespun. The complete Materials list and the first four
blocks were published inHomespunOctober (15.10). In
this issue, we’re publishing the patterns and instructions
for another four blocks, then next month, we’ll publish the
patterns and instructions for the last three blocks and
the steps for assembling and completing your quilt.

Appliqué the shapes by
turning the seam allowance
under with the needle as you
go and working tiny blind
hemstitches using threads to
match the appliqué fabrics.

Trumpeter

From a pale green
print fabric, cut:


  • One rectangle, 9 x 6^33 ⁄ 4 in.

From a khaki print fabric, cut:


  • Two strips, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x6^3 ⁄ 4 in

  • Two strips, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x 11in.

Sew the two short khaki
strips to the top and
bottom edges of the pale
green rectangle. Press the
seams outwards.

Sew the two long khaki
strips to the left and right
edges of the pale green
rectangle. Press. Your block
should now measure 11 x 8^3 ⁄ 4 in
from raw edge to raw edge.

Follow Steps 2-5 to
appliqué the shapes for
the trumpeter to the block.

Horses and stars

From a purple mottled
fabric, cut:


  • One rectangle, 5^1 ⁄ 2 x 30in.

Follow Steps 2-5 to
appliqué the shapes for
three horses and seven stars
to the block.

Work two-wrap French
knots in three strands
of grey embroidery floss for
the horses’ eyes. Stem stitch
their manes and tails in two
strands of embroidery floss to
complement their coats.

Horse-drawn caravan

From a purple print
fabric, cut:


  • One rectangle, 8^3 ⁄ 4 x 14in.

Follow steps 2-5 to
appliqué the shapes for
the horse and caravan
to the block. Jacqueline used
a^1 ⁄ 8 in bias bar to make the
spokes for the wheels and a

(^3) ⁄ 1616 in bias bar for the wheels.

Work a two-wrap
French knots in three
strands of grey embroidery
floss for the horse’s eye. Stem
stitch the bridal, mane and tail
in two strands of dark brown
embroidery floss.
Flautist

From a brown mottled
fabric, cut:



  • One rectangle, 7^3 ⁄ 4 x6^1 ⁄ 4 in.

From a purple print
fabric, cut:


  • Two strips, 1^3 ⁄ 4 x6^1 ⁄ 4 in

  • Two strips, 1^3 ⁄ 4 x10^1 ⁄ 4 in.

Sew the two short
purple strips to the
top and bottom edges of the
brown rectangle. Press seams
outwards.

purple strips to the left
and right edges of the brown
rectangle. Press. Your block
should now measure 10^1 ⁄ 4 x

COMING UP NEXT MONTH
We finish the appliqué for our fabulous circus quilt next
month with the monkey, lion and circus banner blocks.
Instructions will also be provided for assembling the
whole quilt, quilting it and adding all the embellishments.
