together. Separate the batting and
backing from the middle row and pin
the quilt top layer to all three layers of
the other row, ensuring the seams are
aligned at the intersections. Sew the
seam with the walking foot attached.
If you’ve used the correct ½in seam
allowance, the joining seam should
align with the diamond point of the
quilting design on the outer row.

27

Press the seam towards the
middle row and lay the work,
face down, on the table. Trim the
surplus batting from the edge of the
middle row so that it butts neatly
against the edge of the seam. Monica
recommends ruling a line on the
batting and cutting it with scissors
for a neat result.

28

Join the batting to the seam
allowance with batting-seam
tape, fold the raw edge of the middle
row under to meet the stitching line
and slip stitch it in place as before.

29

Turn the quilt to the right side
and position the tulle stencil over
the seam, with the diamonds meeting
at the seam junction. The outer
diamond should be ½in from the edge
of the quilt. Trace over the stencil with
a water-erasable pen. To connect the
quilting design, trace another diamond
on the middle row at the seam junction.
Continue marking the rest of the seam.

30

Quilt and echo quilt over the
join in the same way as before,
connecting the quilting lines where
necessary.

31

Repeat Steps 26-30 to join the
top row to the middle row.

Adding the border

32

Place a 7 x 57in backing
fabric strip right side up on
your table. Lay the left edge of the
quilt on top, right side up and edges
aligned. Then place a 7 x 57in border
fabric strip on top, right side down.
Pin all the layers together. The borders
are deliberately cut a little longer
than the quilt centre panel to allow
for shrinkage – they are trimmed to
length after quilting. Sew through
all the layers with a ½in seam
allowance.

33

Press the borders away from
the quilt centre. Insert a 6½
x 57in strip of batting between the
border layers, aligning the edge of
the batting with the edge of the seam
allowance (it already contains a batting
layer). If you’re using fusible batting,
iron the layers; otherwise, secure
the three layers with safety pins.

34

Starting at the border seam,
mark fi ve parallel lines along
the border spaced at 1in intervals
using the water-erasable pen.
Machine quilt along the lines using
top thread to match the border
fabric and bobbin thread to suit
the backing.

35

Sew the border to the right edge
of the quilt and quilt it in the
same way. Trim the top and bottom
edges of the borders level with the
edge of the quilt centre panel.

36

Sew the top and bottom borders
to the quilt in the same way as
the side borders. When marking the
quilting lines for these borders, extend
the lines of the side-border quilting
to meet the top and bottom border
quilting lines at right angles so the
parallel quilting lines run all the way
around the quilt. Trim the ends of
these border strips level with the
edge of the quilt.

Quilting

37

Position the tulle stencil on the
edge of the quilt centre panel,
with the centre line aligned with the
border seam so the quilting pattern fi ts
in with the rest of the quilting design.
Mark through the stencil with the
water-erasable pen and repeat around
the whole edge of the quilt. Stitch the
double lines of quilting as previously
Step 25 described.
