Binding

38

With quilt as you go, the batting,
backing and border all finish
evenly. For this reason, the binding
strips are cut slightly wider than usual
and a ½in seam allowance is used so
that the batting fills the entire binding.
Begin by joining the binding strips with
45-degree seams to make one length.
Trim the seams, press them open and
fold the binding in half, wrong sides
together and long edges matching.
Press.

39

Sew the binding to the right
side of the quilt, matching the
raw edges of the binding and quilt,
mitring the corners and using a ½in
seam allowance. Refer to the Binding
Diagrams on page 46 to join the ends,
then turn the binding over and sew
the folded edge to the back of the
quilt, covering the previous line of
stitching. Label and date your quilt.

CONVENTIONAL
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

1

Trim all the blocks to measure
19in square, raw edge to raw
edge, with the designs centred.
Monica recommends marking the
squares on the blocks before cutting.
For the pieced blocks, measure 9½in
out from each centre seam and for the
appliqué blocks, measure 9½in either
side of the centre marks on the outer
edges of the blocks.

2

From the floral print border
fabric, cut:

  • Four strips, 7in wide down the
length of the fabric (border) – see
    Monica’s tips.

3

From the red tone-on-tone
print fabric, cut:

  • Eight strips, 2½in across the
    width of the fabric (binding).

4

Arrange the trimmed quilt blocks
in three rows of three blocks as
shown in the main photograph. Join
them in rows using a ½in seam
allowance and press the seams open.

5

Join the three rows with ½in seams,
matching the seam intersections.
Press the seams open. The wider seams
ensure your quilt has the same finished
size and appearance as the quilt-as-
you-go version.

6

Measure the length of the quilt
centre panel in three places,
average the numbers and trim two
7in border strips to this length. Sew
them to the left and right edges of
the quilt, right sides together, matching
the centre points and using a ½in
seam allowance.

7

Repeat Step 6 to add the top and
bottom borders. Press the border
seams outwards.

8

Cut the backing fabric in half across
the width and remove the selvedges.
Sew the pieces together side by side
and press the seam open. Trim the
backing to measure about 190cm
(75in) square.

9

Smooth out the backing fabric on
the floor with right side down and
secure it with masking tape. Lay the
batting on top and ensure it is free of
wrinkles. After pressing the quilt top,
lay it on top of the batting and baste
the three layers together with thread
or safety pins.

10

Quilt as desired. Trim the excess
backing and batting ¼in outside
the edge of the quilt.

11

Cut the ends of the 2½in
binding strips at a 45-degree
angle. Join the strips to make one
long length and press the seams open.
Fold the strip in half, wrong sides
together and long edges matching,
and press. With raw edges together,
sew the binding to the edge of the
quilt with a ¼in seam, mitring the
corners as you go and referring to
the Binding Diagrams on page 46
for details.

12

Turn the binding over and stitch
it by hand to the back of the
quilt. Label and date your quilt.

MONICA’S
MARKING TIPS
QEvery time you use the tulle
stencil with the water-erasable
marking pen, wipe it over with
a tissue to avoid smudges the
next time you use it.
QAs soon as you finish quilting
over a join of your quilt, remove
the water-erasable pen marks
with a wet sponge. Allow each
section to air dry. Never iron over
water-erasable pen marks before
removing them with water, as
they may become permanent.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ...
Movie I love a good old rom-com but, if I had
to choose just one, I think it would have to
be When Harry Met Sally.
Book My favourite book is this beautiful
fairytale book that a family member bought
my daughter when she was a baby. The
pictures were so intricate and enchanting
that we were mesmerised.
TV program Mad Men. I love the authenticity
of the clothing, staging and props. Whenever
I watch it, I feel like I’ve truly travelled back
in time. It is wonderfully done.
Food An antipasto platter with a glass of wine.
Animal The family dog, Duke.
Destination Crescent Head [NSW]. It’s a small
coastal town where the family often holidays

  • a time capsule of wonderful memories from
all the diff erent stages of my life.
Flower Geraniums; their fragrance reminds me
of my grandparents, who always had them
    growing in their gardens.
Piece of music Cold Play’s Don’t Panic, the
chorus of ‘We live in a beautiful world’ always
puts me in a good mood and an inspired frame
of mind. I could listen again and again.
Quote “Always appreciate what you have
today while you work towards want you want
    tomorrow.”
