BOOK NOOK

The latest new leaves, from handbooks
to hardcovers, inspiration to instruction.

Stitch Along by Jenny Doh, $21.99
The subtitle of this book sums it up nicely: 10 stitchers, 30 projects, 100 embroidery motifs. What’s especially
wonderful is that a number of the designers have had projects published inHomespunin the last couple of
years: Charlotte Lyons (May 2013), Mollie Johanson (April 2014), Carina Envoldsen-Harris (February 2014)
and Nicole Vos van Avezathe (our ‘cover girl’ for September 2014). Each designer has created three projects
on a specific theme, such as camping, kitchen, robots, unusual creatures and love, and included instructions
for using them in a finished project. These range from cushions, hoop art and drawstring bags to brooches,
buttons and quilts. In many cases, you’ll be able to use one designer’s embroidery design in another designer’s
finished projects, so this book provides oodles of inspiration. You’ll love it.

Country Elegance
by Deirdre Bond-Abel and
Leonie Bateman, US$26.99
We never tire of celebrating the work
of wonderful Australian crafters who
are making it on the world stage –
especially those who are also members
of the Homespun ‘family’. It’s wonderful,
therefore, to see that Deirdre
Bond-Abel and Leonie Bates, of
Hobart’s The Quilted Crow, have
released their second book with
Martingale, featuring their gorgeous
patchwork and appliqué projects made
from a combo of cotton and felted wool
fabrics. Instructions and full-size
patterns are provided for 12 projects,
ranging from small wallhangings,
cushions and table runners up to
full-size bed quilts. The designs have
been inspired by old tiles and
wallpapers, antique quilts and even the
wrought-iron fretwork on old buildings.
They’re showcased in reproduction
fabrics in the book, but there’s nothing
to stop you from using brights, country
classics or pretty floral prints for your
own interpretations. In addition to the
project instructions, Deirdre and Leonie
provide an overview on how to work
with felted wool, along with some natty
techniques for adding a dogtooth
border, reverse appliqué and piping.

Published by Martingale. Available
in all good quilt and craft shops.
