Where’s Ashburton:Just one hour south of Christchurch,
Ashburton is a busy provincial centre for the surrounding farming
area. It also an easy 45-minute drive to the base of Mount Hutt,
one of the South Island’s top ski fields.
Where in Ashburton:167 Archibald Street. Based in a 100-year-old
pioneer cottage on the Main South Road (just before you hit the
main highway to Timaru and the Southern Lakes district).
Who plays host:Rachel Maw
Worth visiting because:I set up the store about 12 years ago and
haven’t looked back! I have a real obsession with fabric, and it’s
obvious when you see all the samples on display, including quilts,
dolls, table runners, bags, pincushions and everything in between.
There is a wonderful selection of vintage and reproduction fabrics,
which are so popular right now, along with Japanese taupe fabrics,
sashiko and fabrics from some of the best designers, including Kaffe
Fassett, Anna Maria Horner and Tim Holtz, along with ranges from
Moda. I also have supplies for rug making, punchneedle embroidery,
crazy patch and wool appliqué and heaps of books and patterns –
plenty to inspire you. I run regular classes, and friendship groups
are hosted in the classroom at the rear of the shop. I also have
a Christmas room, which is always a treat to browse. I love sourcing
new products and supplies of hard-to-find items from around the
world, so you’ll definitely find something interesting when you visit.
What we recommend:Although there is nothing like being in store,
ordering on line, through my fully secure website and shopping-

basket system, makes the process very easy and opens up a world
of possibilities for customers, no matter where you are.

Where’s Geraldine:We are approximately 1^33 ⁄ 4 hour drive south of
Christchurch, on the scenic inland route to the lakes and mountains,
including Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook.
Where in Geraldine: 9 Talbot Street. You’ll find us in the main street,
right beside the pedestrian crossing. We are on the left as you head
south through town.
Who plays host: Owned and operated by Lisa and Reon (although Reon
is more a ‘behind the scenes’ kinda guy). You will find Lisa in store most
days, occasionally joined by Reon, and Rhona is our super-helpful and
friendly part timer.
Worth visiting because: You will be spoilt for choice in store, as we
have something for everyone – even a chair for the men! There’s
a vast and colourful selection of patchwork fabrics, including florals,
Kiwiana, Christmas, novelty and licensed prints and many more fabrics,
along with a great range of quilting and patchwork supplies – almost
anything you could possibly need. But it doesn’t end there; we also carry
a great selection of wools, patterns and knitting supplies, including
possum, merino and alpaca wools in 4 and 8 ply. You will also find
a great selection of haberdashery in-store, including buttons, ribbons,
zips, threads and much more. And should you need to warm your feet
up, come in and check out our socks and hosiery selection.
What we recommend: Our favourite products in-store are our Kiwiana
fabrics, which represent and depict aspects of our beautiful country
brilliantly. They’re available off the bolt or as precuts, such as fat
quarters, eighths, tenths, Eye Spy squares and more.
