be on the bias grain, it will turn
more easily – you might need a total
of five tiny snips otherwise. Appliqué
the fabric in place around the end of
the line.

26

Continue turning the other
side of the opening under with
the needle and appliqué it in place,
then repeat the process to complete
the other end and side.

27

Repeat Steps 25 and 26 to
reverse needleturn appliqué
the second leaf outline and the
centre vein.

28

Remove any tacking that’s
over the first oval-shaped
side vein. Cut the top layer of fabric
halfway between each side of the
outline and needleturn appliqué it to
the light print fabric underneath in
the same way as before. Repeat this
step for each of the oval-shaped side
veins, clipping the seam allowance
as needed to achieve smooth curves.

29

When all the leaf appliqué is
complete, remove all the
remaining tacking. Turn the square
over and trim the light print fabric

(^11) ⁄ 4 in from the outside line of
appliqué stitching.
30
Repeat Steps 24-29 to
complete all 13 leaf squares.
Assembly
31
On a design wall or the floor,
lay out the border pieces and
appliquéd flower and leaf squares,
as shown in the Quilt Layout
Diagram. Move the flowers and
leaves around until you’re happy
with the arrangement of colours,
distribution of complete and part
flower blocks and light, medium
and dark backgrounds.
32
This quilt is assembled
using partial seams. Begin
by sewing a leaf square to the
bottom left edge of a flower square,
as shown in Diagram 2: sew from
the left edge to the middle of the
small square and stop. Press the
square downwards.
33
Repeat Step 32 to partially sew
a leaf square to the bottom left
edge of the flower squares identified
in the Quilt Layout Diagram by the
‘folded down corner’ on the leaf
squares. Return each partially joined
flower+leaf block to the layout after
you’ve sewn the partial seam.
34
Begin at the top left corner
of the layout and work
diagonally across the quilt. Join the
top left vertical border rectangle
to the left edge of the flower+leaf

CAROLYN’S CENTRES TIP Dresden Plates usually have circular
centres, but instead of perfectly round circles, I fussy cut shapes from a swirly print, each
having a black dot, so some of my centres are oval or almost round rather than regular
circles. They also vary in size – you needn’t have the same sized centre in every flower.
As long as they cover all the raw edges of the wedges in the middle, you can make some
much smaller and others quite large. The irregularity adds to the charm of the design.
