(Elle) #1
squares immediately next to it in your
layout, as shown in Diagram 3. Then
add a flower square to the bottom edge
of this unit (seam 2).

35

Fold the bottom right corner of
the flower block out of the way.
Then sew the adjacent flower+leaf unit
to the right edge of the unit from Step
34 (seam 3) – the partial seam allows
you to do this. See Diagram 4.

36

Next, sew a leaf square to the
bottom left edge of the top border
rectangle with a partial seam (seam 4).
Then sew this unit to the right edge
of the first flower square (seam 5).
See Diagram 5.

37

Return to the partial seam in
the flower+leaf unit you
sewed in Step 34. Complete the
sewing of this seam, continuing all
the way across the top edge of the
adjacent flower square and the bottom
edge of the next leaf square.

38

Continue joining the units,
following the order shown in
the Quilt Construction Diagram until
the entire quilt top is assembled.

Finishing

39

Smooth the backing fabric on the
floor, right side down, and secure
it with masking tape. Lay the batting
on top, ensuring it’s free of wrinkles.
Lay the pressed quilt top, right side up,
over the batting and baste the three
layers together with thread (or safety
pins if you are machine quilting.)

40

Quilt as desired. Carolyn hand
quilted her quilt in patterns to
echo the flower and leaf designs and
background fabric prints. She sewed
large running stitches using grey, black
and multi-coloured Perlé 5 and stranded
embroidery cottons (all six strands).
Instead of weaving the ends inside the
batting to finish them off, she tied them

in knots on the quilt surface to add
further texture.

41

Trim the batting and backing
fabric^11 ⁄ 4 in outside the raw
edge of the quilt.

42

Cut the ends of the binding
strips you cut in Step 14 at a
45-degree angle. Join the strips, end
to end, to make one length and press
the seams open. Fold the strip in half,
wrong sides together and long edges
matching, and press. With raw edges
together, stitch the binding to the
edge of the quilt with a^1 ⁄ 4 in seam,
mitring the corners as you go and
referring to the Binding Diagrams
on page 46 for details.

43

Turn the binding over and
hand stitch it to the back of
the quilt. Label and date your quilt.
