Preparation and cutting

1

If you’re not using pre-cut hexagons,
trace the hexagon from the Pattern
Sheet onto template plastic and cut it
out accurately. Trace around it on stiff
paper, and cut the shapes out on the
traced lines. You can fold the paper
so you can cut several at a time, but
be careful to maintain perfect accuracy.
You need 90 paper hexagons in all.

2

From the cream tone-on-tone
print fabric, cut:

  • Seven squares, 5in.

3

Pin a paper hexagon to the
lightweight fusible batting and cut
the batting immediately next to the
paper. Repeat to cut a total of seven
hexagons from the batting.

4

From the stripe print fabric, cut:

  • Three strips, 2^11 ⁄ 2 in across the
    width of the fabric (binding).

5

Apply a dab of fabric glue to a paper
hexagon and stick it to the centre
of the wrong side of a 5in print fabric
square. Cut the fabric^1 ⁄ 4 in (by eye)
outside the hexagon shape.

6

Repeat Step 5 to cut a total of 83
print fabric hexagons with a paper
hexagon behind each one.

7

Fold the seam allowance of the
fabric hexagon carefully around
the paper template, one side at a time,
and tack it in place with hand-sewing
thread. Begin and end with a knot on
the front of the hexagon to make it
easier to remove the basting later.

Stitchery

8

Using the brown pigment pen, trace
the seven stitchery designs from the
Pattern Sheet onto the centre of the
seven squares of cream fabric. Keep

the lines very fi ne so they will
be covered by the stitching.

9

Fuse the batting hexagons
to the wrong side of the cream
squares, centring them behind
the traced designs.

10

Embroider the designs through
the fabric and batting, referring
to the Stitchery Guide for the threads
and stitches to use.

11

When the stitcheries are
complete, apply a dab of glue
to a paper hexagon and position it
on the batting hexagons behind the
embroidery. Trim the cream tone-on-
tone fabric by eye^1 ⁄ 4 in outside the
paper hexagons.

12

Baste the seam allowances
of the embroidered/batting
hexagons to the papers as you
did in Step 7.
