Remove the selvedges, then cut
the backing fabric in half to
yield two strips about 45 x 107cm (18
x 42in). Join them together along oneshort edge, then trim the strip to
about 65in wide. Smooth the backing
fabric on a table, right side down,
and secure it with masking tape.
Lay the batting on top and ensure
it is free of wrinkles. After pressing
the runner, lay it on top of the batting,
right side facing up, and baste thethree layers together with thread
or safety pins.21
Quilt as desired. Leanne
machine quilted close to both
sides of the vertical seams between
the rows of hexagons. Her rows of
stitching are less than^11 ⁄ 4 in apart.22
Trim the excess backing fabric
and batting^1 ⁄ 4 in outside the
raw edges of the table runner.23
Cut the ends of the stripe print
binding strips at a 45-degree
angle and join them to make one long
length. Press the seams open. Fold
the strip in half, wrong sides together
and long edges matching, and press.
With raw edges together, sew the
binding to the front of the runner
with a^1 ⁄ 4 in seam, mitring the corners
as you go and referring to the Binding
Diagrams on page 46 for details.24
Turn the binding over and
stitch it by hand to the back
