Note: Read all the instructions before
starting the project. This project is
entirely hand sewn. Felt requirements
are based on sheets at least 23 x 30cm
(9 x 12in). For the hoop backings, you
need to cut four circles, just under
25cm (10in) diameter, and individual felt
sheets are too small for this – you can
use cardboard and glue instead of felt
if you wish. As the general procedure
is the same for all the designs, detailed
instructions are given for Alice only;
the other characters have instructions
specific to their particular design only.
Use one strand of embroidery cotton
for all the appliqué.

1

Using a fabric-marking pen,
trace around the inside of one
of the inner hoops four times on
the felt (or cardboard) for the hoop
backings. Trace the first one in a
corner, then zigzag them up and
down across the felt width to
minimise wastage. This has to
be done first because the work
remains in the hoops once you
begin.

2

Trace around the outer
embroidery hoop on one of
the squares of white print fabric.
(This line will be hidden by the
outer hoop.) Trace the complete
Alice figure from the Pattern
Sheet onto the fabric in the centre
of the circle with a fabric-marking
pen. Putting a light source behind
the design makes it easier to see
through the fabric.

3

Stretch the fabric in the
embroidery hoop, making
sure that the tightening screw is
at the centre top and the design
is centred. It’s not removed from
the hoop after this point.

4

Trace all the shapes for Alice
from the Pattern Sheet onto
paper leaving at least^1 ⁄ 2 in
between them or print them
out from the Homespun website
at http://www.homespun.net.au. Cut
each shape out roughly outside
the lines.

5

Staple (or pin) each paper
shape to the correct coloured
felt, right side facing up.

6

Using small sharp, scissors,
cut out all the shapes on the
lines through the paper and the
felt. If you’re using curved nail
scissors for the smaller pieces,
turn the scissors around to match
the direction of the curves.

7

Cut a slit in the hair shape
following the hairline in a
curved V shape, as shown.

8

Remove all the staples and
paper patterns from the felt
pieces. You are now ready to
start sewing them onto the
fabric in the hoop.

9

Position Alice’s hair over the
marked design on the fabric
in the hoop. Appliqué it in place
around the outer edge with
matching thread, leaving the
