Preparation and cutting

1

Trace one tab shape from the
Pattern Sheet onto template
plastic with a permanent-marking
pen. Cut it out on the line.

2

From the assorted bias binding,
cut a total of:

  • 50 lengths, 13in (front and
    back panels)

  • 10 lengths, 3^11 ⁄ 2 in (tab).

3

From each of the hot pink and
aqua fabrics, cut:

  • Two strips, 3 x 12in (top and
    bottom strips)

  • One tab shape from aqua fabric
only using the template (tab lining).

4

From the purple fabric, cut:

  • Two strips, 3 x 22^1 ⁄ 4 in (gusset).

5

From the yellow fabric, cut:

  • Two strips, 4^1 ⁄ 2 x 21in (handles).

6

Trace five flower petal shapes from
the Pattern Sheet onto the paper
side of the fusible web, leaving about

(^1) ⁄ 2 in between them. Cut them out
roughly and fuse them to the wrong
side of the five coloured fabric scraps.
Cut the shapes out on the lines.
7
From each of the scrap cotton
fabric and fusible interfacing, cut:

  • Two squares, 13in (front and back
    panel foundations)

  • One tab shape using the template.

8

From the lining fabric, cut:

  • Two rectangles, 16^1 ⁄ 2 x12^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (front and back)

  • Two strips,3x22^1 ⁄ 4 in (gusset)

  • Two rectangles, 7^1 ⁄ 2 x9^1 ⁄ 2 in (inside
    pocket).

9

From the lightweight fusible
batting, cut:

  • Two rectangles, 11^1 ⁄ 2 x 12in
    (front and back panels)

  • Four strips, 3 x 12in (top and
    bottom strips)

  • Two strips, 3 x 22in (gusset)

  • Two strips, 4^1 ⁄ 2 x 21in (handles)

  • One tab shape using the template.

Front and back panels

10

Fuse the 13in squares of
interfacing to the 13in scrap
fabric squares to form foundations
for the bias-binding panels. If the
fabric is a very dark colour, fuse the
interfacing to its wrong side; this will
reduce the possibility that the colour
of the fabric will show through the
lighter coloured bindings.

11

Thread your sewing machine
with black thread. As you’ll be
stitching very close to the folded edges
of the binding, you might want to fi t an
open-toe or transparent presser foot so
that you have a good view of the area.

12

Decide on the order in which
you are placing the binding
strips. Open and press out both folds
of the fi rst strip and place it, right side
up, on one edge of the interfacing side
of the panel with the raw edges level.

Sew^1 ⁄ 8 in from the edge of the panel
to keep this strip in place.

13

For all the subsequent strips,
open and press out only one fold
of the binding. Put the folded edge of
the next strip over the loose raw edge
of the first strip, overlapping it by^1 ⁄ 4 in.
Machine stitch close to the folded
edge of the second strip through all
layers with black thread. Refer to
Diagram 1. This secures both strips
to the foundation.

14

Repeat Step 13 until you have
a total of 25 binding strips sewn
in place in your chosen order, covering
the foundation. Stitch the raw edge
of the last strip to the foundation close
to its edge.

15

Make a second panel for the
other side of the bag as
described in Steps 12-14.

16

Trim both panels to measure
111 ⁄ 2 x 12in with the long edges
of the strips of bias lying parallel to
the 11^1 ⁄ 2 in edges. If your bias strips
don’t fully cover the trimmed area,
add more strips.

17

Fuse the matching batting
rectangles to the wrong side
of the panels.

18

After removing the backing
paper, arrange the petals you
prepared in Step 5 on the lower left
corner of one panel so the fl ower is
about 1in from the side and bottom
