35

Trim the ends of the binding
level with the tab shape.

36

Fuse the tab batting to the
aqua tab lining shape.
Repeat Steps 24-26 to attach the
other half of the magnetic catch to
the tab, 1^11 ⁄ 4 in from the curved end,
on the aqua fabric side.

37

Sew the other decorative
button to the centre of the
tab front, 1^1 ⁄ 4 in from the curved end,
on the bias binding side.

38

With right sides together,
sew the tab front and lining
shapes together, leaving the short
straight end open. Clip the curves
and turn it right side out. Push the
seam out gently from the inside and
press the tab flat around the edges.
Top stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in from the curved
edge of the tab.

39

Pin the tab to the centre
top edge of the bag back,
right sides together and raw edges
level. Baste it in place^1 ⁄ 8 in from
the raw edges.

Lining

40

With right sides together,
match the two pocket
rectangles and sew around the four
sides, leaving a 2in gap on one
short side. Trim the corners and
turn the pocket right side out
through the opening, pushing out
the corners. Press it flat, turning the
edges of the opening in neatly.

41

Securely machine stitch one
half of the hook and loop tape
to the centre of one long side of the
pocket about^1 ⁄ 2 in from the edge. Top
stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in from the same edge; this
will be the top edge of the pocket.

42

Centre the pocket between
the left and right edges of
one lining rectangle with its top
edge 2^1 ⁄ 2 in from the upper edge
of the lining rectangle. Mark the

position of the hook and loop tape
on the lining rectangle, remove the
pocket and sew the other half of
the tape in the marked position.

43

Put the pocket back in
position on the lining so the
hook and loop tape locks together.
Pin it in place and sew around the
side and bottom edges of the
pocket close to the edges, securing
the opening in the side at the same
time. Reinforce the stitching at the
top corners.

44

With right sides together,
sew the front lining, back
lining and gusset lining together as
described in Steps 27-29, omitting
the batting. Leave an opening of
4in in one seam for turning, but
don’t turn it right side out as yet.

45

With the outer bag right side
out and the lining bag wrong
side out, lower the outer bag into
the lining bag, with the pocket
on the lining facing the back of the
outer bag. The right sides of the
bags should be facing and the
handles and tab should hang down
between the layers. Align the
gusset seams and pin the outer
bag and lining together.

46

Sew right around the top
edge of the bag, securing the
ends of the handles and tab in the
seam as you go. Turn the bag right
side out through the opening in the
lining. Sew the lining opening
closed by hand or machine.

47

Press the top edge of the
bag. Top stitch^1 ⁄ 4 in from
the upper edge to complete the
bag. Refer to Barbara’s Tip about
keeping the base of the bag in
shape if desired.

BARBARA’S DURABILITY TIP One of the things I have learned
is that, when fixing a magnetic fastener or other type of clip to a bag, add a small piece
of template plastic behind the fabric. This gives added strength to the construction,
and it provides more durability than just an extra layer of fabric or interfacing.
