Refer to Diagram 2 to add
the shorter stalks.

Smooth out the batting
for the quilt on the floor or
a large table and secure the
edges with masking tape.
Lay the marked rectangle of
textured fabric on top, right
side facing up, ensuring
it is smooth and free from
wrinkles. Tack the two layers
together using large zig-zag
tacking stitches. You might
find it helpful towork a line
of straight tacking stitches
to mark the border 4in inside
the raw edges – especially
along the bottom edge and
the lower parts of the left and
right edges.

9

Stitch all the flower stalks
in Fantasy Island (50143)
using running stitch. Once
the stitching is complete,
gently pull the fabric from
above and below the stitching
to ensure that it lies flat and
doesn’t gather. If you’ve used
a water-erasable pen, dab the
lines gently with a damp cloth
to remove the lines.

Flowers on main stalks

10

Use the templates you
made in Step 2 to trace
14 small leaves, 14 medium
leaves and 14 large leaves on
to cardboard. Cut them out
on the traced lines. Pin the
templates to the wrong side
of assorted scraps of green
fabrics and cut the fabric

(^33) ⁄ 8 in outside the edges of the
template. Make small cuts
into the seam allowance,
then fold the fabric over the
template and tack it in place –
use cotton thread, as polyester
thread may melt when
pressed. Steam press each
fabric-covered card template
well from both sides. When
you are ready to stitch each
shape, remove the tacking
and carefully lift the fabric
off the template.
11
Appliqué the leaves
to the background
using threads to match the
leaf fabrics: appliqué three
pairs on each main fl ower
stalk. Tita varied the position
of her leaves: on one stalk,
the lowest pair of leaves is
4in from the bottom tacked
border. On others, the lowest
pair of leaves is up to 6in from
the bottom tacked border.
12
Choose fabrics for the
Suffolk puff fl owers on
each main stalk: stalks 3, 4
and 6 have 13 Suffolk puffs
each; the others have 11
Suffolk puffs.
13
To make a Suffolk
puff, trace around the
appropriate circle template
you made in Step 1 on the
wrong side of the fabric. Cut
the fabric out on the line.
Turn over a^1 ⁄ 4 in hem around
the edge of the circle and
hold it in place by working
a small running stitch close
to the fold in hand-quilting
thread to match the fabric.
Leave thread tails at least 8in
at the beginning and end
of this stitching.
14
Pull the thread tails
to gather the circle
of fabric up tightly until the
opening in the centre is quite
small. See Diagram 3. Tie
the thread tails together
in a double knot, but do
not trim them.
15
Refer to Diagram 4
to make Suffolk puffs
in the appropriate size and
number for each main stalk.
For the small (S) puffs, use the
1in template; for the medium
(M) puffs, use the 1^1 ⁄ 8 in
template; and for the large (L)
puffs, use the 1^3 ⁄ 8 in template.
16
To attach the puffs to
your quilt, position
them on the background
fabric, opening side up.
Thread the thread tails on
a needle and take them
through the back of the puff,
the background fabric and
batting. Tie a knot to secure
the thread, then trim it close
to the knot. Use thread to
match the puff fabric to

TITA’S PRESSING TIP
Your project will benefit enormously from good and
frequent pressing during its construction. Don’t skip
this process.
