appliqué it in place on the
front of the quilt around its
outer edges.
Large and medium
flowers
17
Make eight white
Suffolk puffs using
the 2^33 ⁄ 8 in template.
18
Make five green
puffs using the 1^1 ⁄ 8 in
template. Layer a green puff
on top of five white puffs,
with the puff openings
facing each other. Appliqué
the outer edge of the green
puff to the white one. Work
a series of colonial knots in
Chocolate (230) in the centre
of the green puff.
19
Make three green
puffs using the 1^3 ⁄ 8 in
template. Appliqué them in
the centre of the remaining
three white puffs, this time
with their openings facing
up. Then make three mauve
puffs using the^3 ⁄ 4 in template
and appliqué them, opening
side down, on top of the
green ones, and add colonial
knots, as before.
20
Refer to the quilt
photo on page 92 to
position the white flowers on
the background fabric, and
appliqué them in place. Then
work some stab stitches that
go all the way through to the
back of the batting close to
the edge of the green puffs
to hold the white flowers in
place more securely.
21
Make nine mauve
puffs using the 2in
template and nine pink
puffs using the 1in template.
Appliqué the pink puffs
to the mauve ones, with
their openings facing. Work
colonial knots in their centre.
Appliqué these flowers to
the background as you did
for the white flowers.
Large five-petal
flowers
22
To make the two-layer,
five-petal flowers,
begin by making seven green
puffs using the 2in template.
Use a chalk or mechanical
pencil to lightly mark five
stitching lines, as shown in
Diagram 5, on the ‘back’ of
the puff (the side that doesn’t
have the opening). Tie a knot
in a length of Chocolate (230)
thread. Insert the needle in
the puff opening and bring
it up through the centre on
the back of the puff. Work
running stitches along one
of the lines; when you reach
the edge of the puff, gently
pull up the stitches a little
to gather the fabric.
23
Insert the needle in
the folded outer edge
of the puff and take it back to
the centre between the two
layers of fabric. Repeat the
stitching and gathering on
the remaining four marked
lines. Return the thread to the
centre of the puff and tie it
off securely in the opening.
24
To make the centres of
the five-petal flowers,
cut seven pink circles using
the^1 ⁄ 2 in template. Do not
fold over a hem around
