the outer edges on these
circles. Instead, work a row
of running stitches about

(^11) ⁄ 8 in from the raw edge, pull
it up gently to gather, tie the
thread tails together and trim
them close to the knot.
25
Flatten each of these
small puffs and pull
them into a circular shape.
Appliqué them in the centre
of the green puffs – but
just prior to completing the
appliqué stitching, poke a
small amount of fibre fill under
them to give them dimension
and raise them above the
lower puff’s opening.
26
Repeat Steps 22-25 to
make 22 pink flowers
with green centres.
27
Position the 29 five-
petal flowers on the
background fabric, referring
to the photograph for
guidance. To secure them in
place, work two stab stitches
close to the outer edge at the
end of each row of running
stitch that forms the petals.
Then work stab stitches
around the edge of the flower
centre. This leaves the edge
of each petal freestanding.
Small five-petal
flowers
28
Repeat Steps 22-23
to make 49 small five-
petal flowers. As a guide,
Tita made 39 puffs using the
11 ⁄ 8 in template and green,
yellow and white fabrics,
and 10 puffs using the 1^3 ⁄ 8 in
template and yellow and
white fabrics. She used
Finca Presencia No 16 and
hand-quilting threads in
a variety of colours to work
the running stitches.
29
Complete each flower
by working four or five
colonial knots in their centre
in a thread colour of your
choosing.
30
Position these small
flowers on the quilt
background, referring to the
photograph for guidance.
To secure them in place,
work two stab stitches close
to the outer edge at the end
of each row of running stitch
that forms the petals.
Filler flowers
31
Make eight puffs
using the 1in template
and seven puffs using the
(^7) ⁄ 8 in template. Tita used
a selection of mauve and
purple fabrics, embroidering
their centres in yellow.
32
Position them on the
background fabric to
fill in gaps in your floral array,
and appliqué around their
outer edges to secure them
in place.
Leaves
33
To make the leaves that
are scattered around
the lower part of the flower
garden, trace a circle on to
cardboard using the 1^3 ⁄ 8 in
template and another one
using the 1^1 ⁄ 8 in template. Cut
them out on the traced lines.
Pin the templates to the wrong
side of assorted green fabric
scraps and cut the fabric
(^3) ⁄ 8 in outside the edges of the
template: cut eight larger
leaves and 19 smaller ones.
34
Work a row of running
stitch close to the
edge of each circle, leaving
long tail threads. Lay a fabric
circle right side down on the
table. Centre the appropriate
cardboard template on the
back of the fabric, then pull
up the stitching to gather the
fabric around the cardboard
template. Tie the threads
off securely. Steam press
well from both sides. Gently
remove the tacking, carefully
lift the fabric off the template
and re-use the templates.
35
Fold each fabric
circle in half, wrong
sides together, and pin the
layers together. Stitch a
row of quite large running
