(Elle) #1
on top, right side facing up, ensuring it
is smooth and free from wrinkles. Tack
the two layers together using large zig-
zag tacking stitches.

47

Fold the fabric+batting in half,
short edges matching and crease.
Work a line of tacking stitches along the
crease, dividing the rectangle in half.
Work all your appliqué in the lower half
of the rectangle – the upper half will
become the cushion back.

48

Use a water- or air-erasable fabric
marking pen to lightly mark the
vertical lines for the main flower stalks,
referring to Diagram 7. Begin by drawing
in the centre stalk (stalk 4). Then draw in
three stalks on each side of it, each 1^11 ⁄ 2 in
away from the others.

49

Repeat Step 9 to embroider the
stalks. Repeat Steps 12-16 to
appliqué two Suffolk puffs to stalk 1
(one puff made with the 1in template
and one puff made with the 1^1 ⁄ 4 in
template), four Suffolk puffs to stalk 4
(one with the 1in template, two with
the 1^1 ⁄ 8 in template and one with the
11 ⁄ 4 in template), and two to stalk 6 (one
with the 1in template and one with the
11 ⁄ 8 in template).

50

Repeat Step 10 to appliqué eight
small leaves – two on each of
stalks 1, 3, 5 and 7.

51

Repeat Steps 22-27 to make six
two-layer, fi ve-petal fl owers.
Repeat Steps 28-30 to make 11 small
fi ve-petal fl owers.

52

Repeat Steps 37-41 to add one
small bee, one small butterfl y
and one medium butterfl y. This time,
however, don’t use any batting inserts.

Assembly

53

Press the panel well, avoiding
the appliquéd motifs. Fold the
panel in half, right sides together and
short edges matching. Pin, then stitch
around the three raw edges, leaving an
8in opening in the centre of the bottom
edge. Trim the corners and turn the
cushion right side out.

54

Use your fi ngers to press the seam
open around the three edges, then
steam press the cushion from the back
initially, then from the front. Turn in the
raw edges along the opening and tack
them in place.

55

Stuff the cushion fi rmly and
evenly with fi bre fi ll. Take care

to ensure that the stuffi ng is pushed
right into each corner.

56

Ladder stitch the opening closed.
Remove the tacking threads.

57

Repeat to make a second
cushion.
