PRESIDENT OF POTTERY BARN
On a recent visit, the US-based
retailer shared her top tips for
hosting a successful summer soiree.

❖To create ambience, use fl ameless candles and lanterns.
“Our fl ameless candles are one of my favourite items.
I have 50 of them in my garden at home. They’re
battery-operated, on timers and every evening at 7pm
my garden starts glowing. They last all summer.”
❖Layer from the ground up. “I think layering rugs when
you’re outside is a must-do. We have a great range of
natural rugs to give an earthy, textured base note to
your outdoor setting, plus a range of all-weather rugs.”
❖Mix colours and patterns. “When entertaining outdoors,
you can be bolder with colours. Blues are a favourite in
Australia, so mix and match blues, turquoises and
whites. You could also throw in some warmer tones.
We have a lot of ready mixes so you can’t go wrong.”
❖Create intimacy. “Entertaining is all about connecting
with people, so position your furniture to help with
that. I like seating arrangements that lend themselves
to conversation – use a couple of lower lounge seats
with smaller drum outdoor co‹ ee tables.”
❖ Set an interesting table. “Choose a runner in a fun
fabric, then use something like woven placemats and
mix-and-match plates. Put something natural on the
table, add candles and a fabulous centrepiece.”
