42 BUILDING AUSTRALIA 2014

WINNER

National Public Buildings Award – $10 million to $50 million

ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd

Queensland
Project Bond University Abedian School of Architecture

Stretching long and lofty, with no dominant façade, the building is a rich hybrid of simple elements. Giant glass windows extend from floor to ceiling,
flooding the interior with light. Panes of wood, glass and concrete dominate the interior. All aspects of this 2500 square metre building were constructed
on site, with due care taken to avoid interrupting the university’s day-to-day operations. The complex formed concrete scoop structures, bespoke
window and glazing systems are Australian construction firsts. Custom designed steel connection plates were required for each connection to the
‘scoops’ to ensure a seamless integration with the curved elements.
