“We were lucky in that it didn’t take us too
long to get pregnant. It actually made sex
more fun – there wasn’t really anything
stressful about it. But, of course, I think it was
the one time we weren’t focused on getting
preggo that it happened. It was on a weekend
trip to Melbourne, after an incredibly hot day
and too many wines by the Yarra. Six weeks
later, I was knocked up and super excited.”

“It took us 14 months to conceive, so I was
about to start panicking. I realised we had to
put in more effort. I’d already worked out
when I was ovulating (from counting the days)
and we were already having sex at some point
around then. But I needed a militant approach.
Next time I ovulated, I made my husband have
sex with me every day for five days straight. It
was definitely not some pinnacle moment of
loving sex. It was functional. But hey, it worked.
The next month I was pregnant. With twins.”

FERTILITY PROBLEMS

Of those who have fertility
problems, the percentage of
women who conceive varies
with the type of condition,
the severity of the problem
and treatment used.
A common option is in
vitro fertilisation (IVF), which
is the process of placing egg
and sperm together outside
the body. Once the egg is
fertilised, it’s put inside the
woman’s uterus, where it will

hopefully stick to the lining
of the womb and grow. For
women aged 30 to 34, the
clinical pregnancy success
rate (within five rounds) of
IVF is 51.7 per cent. Every
cycle of IVF costs about
$8500 upfront, and Medicare
and your private health
insurance company should
cover some of those costs.
