A matte mouth used to mean

dry lips. Not so hot. But next-

gen formulas are more creamy

than waxy so you look well-

hydrated, but not shiny. Still,

it’s important to prep; use a lip

exfoliator to scrub away any

flaking, then use a moisturiser.

WHAT NOT TO DO: Avoid pastel

colours and frosted finishes

• that’s not this season’s trend
  (and this is not a Madonna
  throwback). Red, dark mulberry,
  rosy hues and warm nudes are
  shades to stick to. Super chic,
  super sleek.

A suede-look mani takes a little more

TLC than the original – but it’s worth

it. Flat finishes highlight flaws in nails,

so use a buffer and sweep on a ridge-

filling base to mask any imperfections.

Use a matte top coat to take the shine

off your usual fave polishes.

WHAT NOT TO DO: Drying drops usually

contain silicon, which adds shine, so you

can’t use them on a matte mani. In fact,

the ingredient that makes a polish shiny

also helps it dry – without that, a matte

polish takes about twice as long to set.

It’s time to quit dewy skin. Put

away anything that promises to

make you gleam or glow (for now,

anyway). A velvety-finished matte

base is a little more elegant and

totally modern. It’s also cleaner

and more controllable than layers

of liquid or cream foundation.

WHAT NOT TO DO: Matte makeup

doesn’t mean OTT powdering

or a chalky finish. You should

not end up looking like an extra

on Dallas (the ’80s version).

Paired with just a little smoky

eyeshadow and nude lip, it gains
