So no, you don’t need a wrinkle cream at 18, but there are ways
to fight the ageing process no matter how old you are
You’re so fresh! At this
age your skin is well
hydrated, collagen and
elastin is good, and cell
turnover is fantastic.
Right now it’s all about
maintaining peak-
performing skin for
as long as possible.
If sunscreen makes you
break out, steer clear of
sunscreens containing
zinc or titanium oxide.
Opt for synthetic
sunscreens with lighter
molecules and barrier-
forming ingredients.
If your younger years were
oily, you may be in the habit
of daily exfoliation. With
your cell turnover slowing,
it’s time to cool it with the
scrubs. “Over-exfoliation
can make skin dehydrated
and infl amed,” says Vounnou.
Invest in large Jackie
O-style sunglasses with
UV protection as an
anti-ageing eye defence.
Make sure they go down
to the cheekbone to
ensure they’re covering
the whole eye area.
We know that it’s
become force of habit,
but try to avoid spraying
perfume on your neck,
as it can cause some skin
pigmentation. Move your
spritzing to your hair or
on your clothing instead.
Too much partying, not
enough water and a bad
diet start to show on your
face. “If you’ve been an
avid SPF wearer, you won’t
see the ageing e ects as
much, but in the Australian
sun a girl of 28 can look
35,” says Vounnou.
Once we hit 30, we see one
per cent less collagen
production every year after.
That means it’s time to fi ght
back with ingredients that
help stimulate collagen and
elastin content, and aid skin
hydration to plump out
wrinkle depth.
This is where we really
start to see damage on
the neck and chest, with
sagging on the chest and
fi ne lines becoming more
pronounced. But if you
have done the prep work,
these won’t develop
until much later.
“If you make a broad
spectrum sunscreen with
an SPF 30 or higher part
of your daily routine now,
you’ll save yourself a lot
of money in corrective
treatments down the
track,” says Heather
Vounnou, Ella Bachè’s
national post-graduate
training manager and
skin care expert.
Now fi ne lines may
manifest and pigmentation
can start to show. Get
a jump start on them
by introducing pigment-
targeting formulations
with nano peptides.
“Nano peptides target the
pigment forming cells and
stimulate collagen and
elastin,” says Vounnou.
The eye area is where we
see ageing the most, so
a restorative eye cream
defi nitely needs to be in
your repertoire by now.
“As well as the eye area,
apply your eye cream
around the lips and in the
nasolabial fold. These
areas become more lined
with age so can use extra
help,” says Vounnou.
If you haven’t started
already, it’s time to bring
your skin care routine all
the way down your neck.
Every day. Antioxidants
and peptides are extremely
important at this stage and
it’s time to incorporate lots
of vitamin C. And just
remember, it’s all about
the décolletage.
