t works when there is a balance at play: soft with hard, cool
with hot, simple with complicated. The world of two here is
key. It’s the design mind of Camilla Freeman Topper, who
completed her masters in fashion design at Florence’s
Accademia Italiana Arte Moda, spurring on her aesthetic and
understanding of design and construction, while her engineering-
trained brother and best friend, Marc Freeman, whose natural
business acumen has kept their label, Camilla and Marc, on the

constant rise. Or, as Freeman Topper jokes: “I cook, he eats.”
See, they’re not always all business. Their trajectory should be a
blueprint for young designers, the need to balance the art with the
commerce. It’s been 12 years since their debut collection, but
the brand retains the same spirit, a feat that is admirable – it’s
harder than it sounds. At the core is the dexterous manipulation of
print, construction and colour, which twists from season to season,
but each time astutely reflects what we want ... and buy. ■
