Candy crush

conventions. A sugar-fuelled trip.

FASHION ROYALTY
Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri
believe in romance. Shakespeare, Dante and Virgil
informed sweeping celestial dresses, gauzy-gossamer
necklines and evening bustiers with wings to f lutter
forth from the chest, and the heart. Their folkloric
signature was there, of course (Russian-skewed this
time), but the lyricism was in the free-falling fabrics
and lavish embellishment. With all that’s going on
in the world, it’s still possible to fall deeply in love.

LIFE OF AN ARCHITECT
A f loating skirt with gravity-defying pleats and a simple top, painstaking
embellishment glinting on boots – at Christian Dior, it all read as a democratic
rendering in the realm of high, high fashion. The scaffolding of the show space
and the 50s and 70s silhouettes reinforced the feeling that Raf Simons is restoring
the almost ancient art of the atelier like a delicate relic now ready for the future.
