ROAD TO ICE

Marcus Arnold,
Canterbury, New Zealand

Antarctica is often seen to be untouched
and pristine, and rightfully so. However,
being such a desolate and fragile place,
the smallest activities can have a huge
impact on the environment, even
if it is just aesthetic. I believe this
image captures a part of the impact
we have there.

STATUS: ENDANGERED
Ofer Levy, New South Wales
A male golden-shouldered parrot sits on
a termite mound, where he and his mate
have dug their nest. This endemic bird
is listed as endangered, with surveys
pointing to a total wild population
of about 2000 birds, and only about
300 breeding pairs.
