Cutting
1
From each of the 30 solid
colour fabrics, cut:
- Four squares, 6^11 ⁄ 2 in and crosscut
each square once on the diagonal
to yield a total of 240 half-square
triangles – only 192 will be used
in this project - Three rectangles, 3 x 5^1 ⁄ 2 in
to yield a total of 90 rectangles - only 80 will be used in this
project (Flying Geese border).
2
From the remaining solid
colour fabrics, cut:
- A total of 12 assorted squares,
31 ⁄ 2 in (border corner blocks).
3
From the solid grey fabric, cut:
- 13 strips, 3in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut 160
squares, 3in (Flying Geese border) - 12 squares, 3^1 ⁄ 2 in (border
corner blocks).
4
From the dark pink tone-
on-tone print fabric, cut:
- Eight strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric (binding).

Beginning at one corner with
a selection of your colours, lay
out 192 triangles in 12 rows of eight
half-square triangle units on your
design wall, rotating the units as
you go to form the diamond pattern
shown in the Placement Diagram.
Play around with the mix of colours
to achieve the look you want –
Leanne clustered her reds and
oranges towards one corner and the
lighter pinks diagonally opposite
and above. However, rather than
being a rigid colourwash, her layout
is dynamic and quite playful and
surprising in places. You have 48
more triangles than you need; this
allows you leeway so some colours
can be repeated more than others,
as Leanne did in her layout.
6
When you’ve fi nished laying
out the half-square triangle
units in a pleasing design, double
check that all the units are
rotated the right way to form
the diamonds. Before you start
assembling the units, it’s a good
idea to take a couple of photos so
you can get another perspective
of your layout, as well as having
a record should any pieces get
out of place during assembly.
7
Starting in one corner of the
layout and working in rows,
match two triangles with right
sides together and join their long
edges, taking care not to stretch
the bias edges as you go.
8
Open the square and press the
seam towards the darker colour.
Trim each square to precisely 5^1 ⁄ 2 in
by placing a quilter’s square ruler
on it with the 45-degree line on
the diagonal seam and trimming
the edges. See Diagram 1. Also
see Leanne’s Trimming Tip for
an alternative approach.
9
Your squares should measure
51 ⁄ 2 in from raw edge to raw
edge. Put them back in the layout
as you go.
10
Repeat Steps 7-9 to join
all 96 units.
11
Check your layout against
your photo to make sure all
the units are in the right place and
rotated correctly – it’s your last
chance to make any changes now.
12
Join all the units into rows,
pressing the seams of odd
rows to the left and even rows to
the right.

LEANNE’S COLOUR
TIP Don’t feel you need to stick
with pinks, oranges and reds. Why
not try blues and greens, or pinks
and purples, or even black and white
prints? They’d look amazing. All you
need is about 30 diff erent fabrics
- the colours are your choice!
