Australian Homespun - February 2016_

(John Hannent) #1

Cut the two hair
elastics open. On the
flap, measure in 3^11 ⁄ 2 in from
the left and right edges and
mark the linen side of the
fl ap. With the ends level
with the raw edges of the
fl ap, baste the hair elastics
at these points to form loops
for the buttons. Machine
sew back and forth a few
times over the elastic within
the seam allowance to make
them secure.

33

Repeat Step 29 using
the second strip of
binding to bind the raw
edges of the pouch: begin
at the bottom folded edge,
work up one side, across
the top (fl ap) edge (catching
the ends of the elastics in
the seam) and down the
other side to the bottom
folded edge. Mitre the
binding at the corners of
the fl ap and leave about
1in of binding overhanging
at the start and fi nish.

34

Fold the binding over
to the lining/inner

pouch side, folding the
overhanging ends in neatly
to match the bottom fold of
the pouch. Hand stitch the
ends neatly and sew the
binding to the other side,
covering the previous line
of stitching.

35

Using the elastic
loops as guides, mark
the position of the buttons
on the front of the pouch.
Thread a needle with a
double length of thread to
match a button and knot
the ends. For neatness, take
the needle through from the
front under the button and
only stitch through the linen
and batting, not all the way
through to the lining. The
button will hide the knot
and stitches. Fasten the
buttons with the elastic
loops to fi nish.
