118 AUSTRALIA KEN DUNCAN 119

Island EscapeLord Howe, Island, NSWLord Howe Island is one of Australia’s hidden gems, a delightful crescent of land luxuriating in the subtropical splendour of the South Pacific. The sense
of isolation is fantastic. Lying more than 500km off the NSW coast, it’s a land of beaches and forests and of the famous twin peaks of Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower, seen in the background here. This shot, taken on a visit to Lord Howe with my family, captures the utter serenity of the island. A
white-flecked sky arches over the mountains, as a turquoise-coloured sea laps gently on the sand. There are few mod-cons for tourists here – it is like stepping back in time to an era when nature reigned supreme. To me, it felt like paradise!

ABOVE The RemarkablesKangaroo Island, SA
Wonderfully sculpted, Remarkable Rocks are a famous collection of boul-ders on a Kangaroo Island promontory. This location provides many different angles to explore. Nature itself can be one of the greatest sculptors of all and these interesting shapes certainly earn the place its ‘remarkable’ title.
OPPOSITE TOP SunsetShelley Beach, Port Phillip Bay, Vic.
Many Melbourne residents travel across to the other side of Port Phillip Bay to spend their holidays in and around the resort town of Portsea. During the week, it can be wonderfully peaceful, but on weekends and public holidays it generally gets a lot busier. But crowded or not, the area always seems to
have a holiday feel. The best time to see – and photograph – some of the great locations on the Mornington Peninsula is either sunrise or sunset when few people are usually out and about.

OPPOSITE BOTTOM AfterglowPicnic Rocks, TAS
This image was taken at Picnic Rocks on Tasmania’s east coast. The sunset had been golden, crowned in glory and majesty, and I had been about to leave because I thought, surely it couldn’t get any better. But I decided to stay on, and as I did, the sunset evolved into this lingering pastel vision.
Everything was so subtle and soft and there was a pervading calm. Then all of a sudden the curtain was slowly drawn on the day as the sky went from a beautiful pink to a powdery blue to a midnight blue – until the day was gone.
Scenery like this helps put into perspective the problems that often con-front us, because there is an overwhelming sense of peace when we witness the beauty of such magical moments.
