As competition themes go, ‘Heat’ isn’t the
easiest to capture with a camera. Here are
some of our favourite interpretations.

EDITOR’S COMMENT
You can almost feel the
temperature rising just
looking at Ben Watson’s
high-octane shot from the
2015 Avalon Airshow.
“Their closing stunt each
day was to fly line astern at
funny angles about 20 feet
off the ground while a huge
fire wall exploded behind
them,” writes Ben. “I made
sure I had a short exposure
time and set my camera
to high speed continuous
shooting. I chose this shot
because the aircraft are
wonderfully focussed and
I feel it shows the fire wall
at it’s best, before it begins
to dissipate.”
We like the energy of the
shot and the panoramic
crop which puts the focus
on the three aircraft while
removing any distractions.
A great idea by Ben to shoot
in high-speed continuous
mode so he could choose
the best moment from a
number of frames. Well
done Ben!
