EDITOR’S COMMENT
I was intrigued by this shot from Glenn
Gilligan as a subtle but original take on
the topic of heat. Glen was camping at
Copeton Dam near Inverell, NSW, on a
hot day when he saw these Noisy Miner
birds gathered around a tap.
“They were sticking their beaks up the
spout to try to get a few drops of water,”
he says. “I couldn’t understand why they
didn’t go down to the dam for a drink but I
guess they didn’t want to leave the shade
of the trees.”
I think the story behind this photo
Glenn, which takes a different approach
to the theme. You say the birds were
“sticking their beaks up the spout”,
and I think the image would have been
stronger if you had been able to capture
that moment. I like the out-of-focus
background and the simple neutral colour
palette. Good job.

HOW I DID IT
I placed a box of matches on
a black hoodie draped over
an outdoor chair. The photo
was taken at twilight while
shining a small torch at the
box of matches. I lit the first
match with a lighter and used
continual shooting mode and a
wireless trigger.
