Secretly, I’d always quite looked forward to my mid-
life crisis. I’d grow an unconvincing ponytail, pretend
I like dubstep, buy a red sports car (obviously) and
chase inappropriate blondes. This behaviour would,
of course, be self-indulgent and clichéd. But it also
sounded rather fun.
The catalyst for these pitiful antics, I assumed,
would be a milestone birthday. Confronted by the
slippery slope of physical decline, I’d embark on a
series of forlorn attempts to prove to “the kids” that
I’ve still “got it”.
In bad news for Sydney’s Harley Davidson salesmen,
however, our story “The Evolution of Man” (p89) may
have put this angst-ridden soul-searching on hold.
In the feature, four men on the cusp of a new decade
look to their forthcoming years not as a dull slide
into elasticated waistbands, but as the launch pad for
personal growth and physical challenge.
The message is that getting older in the traditional
pipe-and-slippers way is, to some extent, a lifestyle
choice. A milestone birthday isn’t the excuse for a mid-
life crisis but a time to set yourself up for a new decade
of health and fitness. Essentially, it’s like the New Year
on steroids.
But just as the dawn of a new year is a fairly
arbitrary time for making resolutions, a significant
birthday isn’t necessary, either. It doesn’t actually
matter how old you are. Your personal war against
weakness and infirmity can start today. Yes, ageing is
inevitable, but a messy descent into existential despair
is not. Stare it down and grow up.
