“I’M THE FITTESTI’ve ever been, but at the
same time things are changing in my body. I’m
currently 85 kilograms. Through my twenties
I was 90kg and at one point I got up to 96kg
at eight per cent body fat. It was driven by
aesthetics: I was single, I wanted to make that
first impression and I wanted to look good at
the beach.
“But it wasn’t functional. I’d hike up a
volcano for three hours and the amount of
food I’d need to consume to keep that muscle
there was insane. At the same time my energy
levels would drop off quicker than other
people. It was slowing me down in some of the


things I wanted to do. I started to realise there
was so much more I could do with my fitness
if I used it correctly, rather than it just being
about looking good. Now I maintain a body
that’s not as big but much more functional.
“One thing I’ve noticed among my friends
as they move into their thirties is that as they
settle down, find a wife, have children and
focus more on their careers, fitness tends to
drop off the radar.
“That’s why I make it a priority. When I’m
stressed at work, going for a long run or doing
yoga on a cliff overlooking the ocean helps
clear my head and resets everything.

“One thing that never changes regardless
of where I am is that I do some form of
physical activity first thing in the morning.
That can vary between skipping, running,
swimming, plyometrics or calisthenics.
A skipping rope is something I can take
anywhere in the world and use in confined
spaces. My other staple is push-ups. I quite
often do a thousand a day, which breaks down
to 100 every hour.
“Because I live a very unstructured life
on the road, fitness is one thing I can
control. It lays the foundation for success
in everything else.”
