PIMPLY PROBLEM
I’m14andIhavealltheseheat

self-conscious about wearing
dresses and singlets. They
don’t hurt or anything, but is
there anything I can do?Zits
I’m not sure that your
descriptionofa‘heat
pimple’ is the same as
mine. The most likely

being trapped and your
pores are getting
blocked. These can be
helped by not wearing
tight, synthetic clothes.
Secondly, there is
a condition called ‘keratosis
pilaris’ where little red bumps
appear, usually on upper arms,
butalsoonlegsorbumcheeks.
It’s harmless. There is no actual
cure and usually clears up by
itself, but you can do things like
avoiding excessive skin dryness
and using moisturiser.

Boob blues
I’m on the pill to regulate my crazy periods, but my boobs
get increasingly sore. It’s become excruciating. I feel fine
when wearing a bra or lying down, but otherwise it feels
like my boobs are trying to fall off. I’m an F-cup so they
are heavy. Why is this happening? Sore
It’s not uncommon for hormones in the Oral Contraceptive pill
to make breasts enlarge and become tender. You could talk to
your doctor about a lower dose or maybe a different delivery
system – e.g. the ring, implant or a progesterone-releasing IUD.
It’s no fun having large uncomfortable breasts, so make sure you
have properly fitting bras. Some women find some vitamins can
help with breast tenderness. Talk to your pharmacist about which
one might help you. P.S. Everyone else, no! You can’t just go on
the pill to get bigger boobs!

So how often should you change a tampon?
According to MedicineNet, at least every four to
eight hours is best. You should also use the lowest
absorbency tampon needed for your flow.

TAMP-OUCH
I started my period and have only used pads. When
I try tampons, I can’t feel a thing when I insert it but
when I try and take it out it hurts. I keep on trying
but it hurts even when I use the smallest tampon
and leave it in for four hours. I try and calm myself
but nothing works. To o t i g ht
I’d like to know where the pain is, what it’s like and
how long you are leaving the tampon in for. I’m
wondering if the tampon is sort of sticking to your
vagina walls and that could be the source of pain.
Try a little experiment: put a tampon in when the
flow is reasonable, then remove it after a minute or
two. If it’s still painful, change the angle of the string
as you pull. You are pulling the tampon through
muscle (the pelvic floor) and some angles may be
more comfortable than others. If this doesn’t help
the old motto applies – see a doctor if pain persists.

Short end of the stick
I’m worried I’ve stopped growing. I’m average
height and only 13. I haven’t had a big
growth spurt for a year and have stayed the
same foot size for that time. No growth
Charts exist that can plot growth over time. Your doctor will
have them. These charts allow you to graph your growth
against expected patterns (there is a wide variation of
normal) and this is the best way to check how you are
tracking. If your doctor thinks your development is not
progressing, they can do some tests including an x-ray of
your wrist. The radiology doctor will then compare your
bone development against standard appearances for your
age and may predict how much growth you still have to go.
