Let’s be real: today’s culture
is a teensy bit (read: srsly)
obsessed with relationships. With
#couplegoals flooding our Insta
feeds all day, it’s no wonder so
many people feel like being single
is a problem to be fixed. But here’s
the thing – it’s defs not. In fact,
Nina Funnell, co-author of
Loveability: An Empowered Girl’s
Guide to Dating and Relationships,
says this way of thinking comes
from the old-school belief having
a partner will make you more
popular or socially powerful.
“The stigma of being single is one
of the hardest things to shake,”
she says. “But it’s important that
we do what feels right, not what
others think is right for us.”
A lot of the time, the
people who are putting
pressure on you to find
a BF might not actually
realise it isn’t what you
want. Or, it could be that
they’re projecting what
they actually want back
onto you (probs with the
best of intentions).
Casually remind them

com and that you don’t
feel the need to couple up
just coz everyone else is.
And if they don’t get the
hint? Nina reckons you
should call them out on it.
Try saying something like,
“Why is it my relationship
status seems to be a way
bigger issue for you than
it is for me?” This’ll
definitely bring home
the message that maybe
the problem is actually
THEM, not you and your
~epic~ single lyf!
Never forget!
If the pressure to couple up is starting to wear
you down harder than Miley on a wrecking ball,
remember how empowering it is that you don’t
need a person by your side to feel complete! Plus,
think about – there’s no-one to mess with Netflix
and zero reason to shave your legs. #winning.
