TITLE
Shadowy Character

HOW I DID IT
This image was taken after dark
at home against a light coloured
background. Aiming for a film noir
look, I set up two bed lamps, with
one facing a piece of white cardboard
to soften the light and cast a softer
shadow, while the other was pointed
directly at the model to cast a harsh
shadow. I moved the lamps around
until I felt the shadows looked eerie
enough and the model (my patient
husband) looked suitably sinister.

DETAILS
Canon EOS 7D, 18-270mm lens
@ 35mm, 1/25s @ f/4, tripod.
Lightroom for black and white
conversion, Photoshop CC
for curves.

TITLE
Bethanga Bridge star trails

HOW I DID IT
I’m always captivated by Bethanga
Bridge in Albury, NSW, as it’s such
a distinctive and iconic structure in
this neck of the woods. I took a series
of around 180 images covering an
approximately 90-minute time span
before dawn. Unfortunately I hadn’t
noticed the chilly morning had fogged
up the lens so I had to discard the
last 30 minutes worth! The images
were later stacked in Photoshop to
create the star trail you see here. To
set up this image my main priority is
shutter speed as I needed 30 seconds
to capture a car crossing the entire
length of the bridge. It also happens
to be a good setting for capturing the
star light.

DETAILS
Nikon D7100, 10-20mm lens @
10mm, 30s @ f/5, ISO 3200, tripod.
Approximately 180 images stacked in
Photoshop. Lightroom adjustments
for contrast, clarity, sharpness, noise
and brightness.
