The gondolas on this fairground ferris wheel and the dramatic
clouds in the background attracted Wayne Sherriff. He writes: “One
Raw shot, pointing almost vertical, no filters, converted to three
TIFF images with one EV separation. The sky seemed washed
out so I opted for an HDR tone mapping treatment followed by
further processing in Photoshop. I cropped to square format to
reduce superf luous sky and produced a sepia toned version. This
was then layer blended with the tone mapped image to remove the
blue-grey tones of the sky to accentuate the wispy clouds and reduce
the brightly coloured gondolas to a smaller range of tones while
retaining their predominant reds.”
This is an interesting, texturally rich image with good colour
and a strong point of interest. The vertical shooting angle, square
format and diagonal framing also make it possible to view this shot
vertically and horizontally. There are lots of extraneous bits and

pieces – wire and metal posts – that would usually be distractions,
but in this case they just add to the mystery. This has the feel of
a movie poster: graphic, interesting and eye-catching. It would
have been nice to have one of those red buckets in the foreground,
but we can’t always have it all. Fantastic presentation and good
treatment. Well done!

SAIMA’S TIP: Bending your knees or perching on a wall, looking
up or down or under or over around, can help provide those unusual
points of view that can make an image stand out from the crowd.
