T

he sixth edition of the
Brand Impact Awards may
have had a fresh new look

  • courtesy of New York code poet
Zach Lieberman – but the same old
mantra of ‘the very best of branding’
remained the beating heart of the
    annual, global event.
As ever, the bar was set high by a
    judging panel that included former
    Computer Arts editor Nick Carson,
and many of the best in the business
(who, incidently, were not allowed to
    vote for their own work!).
During an intense full day of
judging, they whittled down a record
    number of nearly 200 entries – 55
projects by 27 different agencies –
always keeping in mind the criteria of

a compelling, appropriate idea;
beautiful, consistent execution; and
work that stands head and shoulders
above its market sector.
On the night, Britain’s Got Talent
finalist Micky P Kerr kicked things off
with his irreverent blend of musical
comedy, before the results were
revealed. In the end, there were
14 Winners on the night, covering 11
projects, and 22 Highly Commended
entries, over the 24 categories.
Superunion and Turner Duckworth
cleaned up this year, with 13 trophies
between them, with the former taking
the Best of Show gong – for the
second year in a row!
Yet it was great to see smaller,
boutique operations like NB Studio

and Texture going shoulder to
shoulder with the larger agencies. And
that’s because the BIAs reward the
best ideas, beautifully executed, with
many of the winners demonstrating
how a strong central idea can translate
across a multitude of applications.
One example was how Superunion’s
‘2 curve’ united varied animation styles
for BBC Two, and also how
Pearlfisher’s tessellating diamond
pattern for Jacob’s created striking shelf
standout across the range.
With a record number of wins,
2019 may go down as one of the
strongest years in branding since the
awards began.

Beating heart of brands

As strictly judged as ever, this year’s BIAs once again celebrated true excellence in branding
