Having topped the UK Studio Rankings

for two consecutive years, Studio Sutherl&

has stayed firmly in the top five this year.

The two-person operation recently moved

premises, swapping studio space in founder

Jim Sutherland’s Kennington home for a

dedicated office in the same building as

NB Studio...

Why do you think other designers respect

your approach so much?

We put joy into every project that comes our

way, and that joy comes out the other end

somehow. We play more at work. And we keep

small in size, but not ambition.

Do you foresee significant hurdles to come,

in the light of ongoing Brexit uncertainty?

There has been a lot of uncertainty, which we

cannot control. Personally, I think Brexit is a

disastrous decision, but all we can do is focus

on the projects at hand, and do them as well

as we possibly can. Be positive, and do good

work for good clients and causes. By doing

everything in our creative powers to add some

joy to people’s lives, we can hopefully help stop

the spread of hate and intolerance.

What’s next for Studio Sutherl&?

We're working on a new Human Atlas

project in Detroit with Marcus Lyon, similar

to our Somos Brasil and WE: Deutschland

projects. We're also working on an amazing

music venue in London, a stately home in

Yorkshire, a new environmental charity,

a local community garden, a portrait of

London, a book of reconstructed flags, several

Chess-related projects, and an identity for

Camberwell, among various other things. It’s

going to be a busy and rewarding time.
