APFEL has been commissioned
to design two pavilion identities
for the Venice Biennale this
year, working with Leonor
Antunes for her exhibition at
the Portuguese Pavilion, and
Eva Rothschild at the Irish
Pavilion. “We’ve worked with
both artists before, and really
enjoyed continuing those
working relationships in the
context of the Biennale,” say
the team.
And what of 2020? “We’re
working on an exciting new
project with 6a architects for
a new art institution in New
York, which will launch in
2021,” they reveal. “We are
also starting our own APFEL
type foundry – look out for the
launch in the spring.”

Headline projects for Made
Thought in 2019 have included
work for Adidas StellaSport,
Editions de Parfums Frédéric
Malle and Fred Perry. The studio
has also published its second
thought journal, To Think
Forever, on the topic of long-term
thinking, and has been hosting
an experimental pop-up store in
Covent Garden (see page 10).
“In 2020, we’re looking to
broaden our audience, share our
insights and ideas to inspire
change across business and the
creative industries to create
better, more environmentally
friendly design,” says co-founder
Paul Austin. “We’re looking into
making a film on this topic,
and taking our pop-up store
overseas.”
